Rennes vs Arsenal ended in a 3-1 victory for the Ligue 1 side as they continue their impressive run in the Europa League.
Arsenal’s hopes of lifting a title this season were dented on Thursday evening, March 7, after suffering an embarrassing defeat in the first leg.
During the Thursday clash played at Roazhon Park, the Premier League side started the match brightly, with Alex Iwobi opening the scoring for the visitors within four minutes of game play.
However, they failed to safeguard the lead as the hosts restored parity just three minutes before the break via Bourigeaud who capitalised on Arsenal’s squad depletion following Sokratis’ red card moments earlier.
Upon the resumption of the second half, Emery was forced to make tactical substitutions, with Matteo Guendouzi coming on for Iwobi in the 52nd minute.
That however did not deter Rennes from mounting more pressure as they doubled the lead in the 65th minute thanks to Nacho Monreal’s own goal.
Julien Stephane’s men went on to make it 3-1 via Ismaila Sarr in the 88th minute to put the game beyond the Gunners. The Gunners now face an uphill task of overturning Rennes’ goal advantage in the second leg as they seek to qualify for the quarter finals.
The Europa League is the only realistic campaign that would see Unai Emery lift a silverware in his first season as Arsenal manager.
