2019 ELECTION: PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE TAKES BUHARI, ATIKU TO COURT OVER CAMPAIGN FUNDING

Usman Ibrahim, the presidential candidate of National Rescue Movement (NRM), has reportedly sued Muhammadu Buhari and Atiku Abubakar over issues with campaign funding at the presidential election.

Ibrahim argues that the duo spent more than provided for by the electoral act during their campaigns. Channels Television reports that the suit was filed at a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja.

The report said the court ordered service of its processes through substituted means on Muhammadu Buhari and the Atiku Abubakar in the case of alleged infraction of the electoral act.

It was learnt that the order was granted by the court on Tuesday, March 5, in the case in which the presidential candidates wants the court to nullify the participation of Buhari and Atiku in the polls.

Ibrahim’s counsel, Ezekiel Ofou, pleaded with the court to invoke section 91(2) of the electoral act, 2010 to nullify the participation of the candidates in the poll for allegedly violating the electoral laws.

We want the court to make an interpretation of section 91, sub-section 2 of the electoral act,” he said.

He further wants the court to take a decision concerning where a candidate contesting for president in Nigeria exceeds the statutory limit of expenditure.

According to the presidential candidate, by spending more than N1 billion each, the candidates of the All progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) violated the electoral law and are liable to be removed as contestants in the election.

The plaintiff’s counsel urged the court for an order of substituted service on the duo when the matter came up for hearing on Tuesday, March 5.

He said he was not able to serve both the president and the PDP candidate. The matter was adjourned by Justice Ahmed Mohammed, who granted the request. The case will now come up on March 26, 2019.

Continentour.com.ng earlier reported how 12 presidential candidates in the February 23 presidential election on Monday in Abuja, congratulated President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC), on his re-election.

Acting under the aegis of Forum of Presidential Candidates and Political Parties for Good Governance, the group said at a news conference in Abuja, that the victory was deserved.
