The growing level of the poverty rate in Nigeria is alarming as the country, according to a report by Brookings Institution, recently overtook India as the nation with the highest number of extremely poor people.
Months after Nigeria took over from India as the poverty capital of the world, the World Poverty Clock created by Vienna-based World Data Lab put the number of Nigerians living with extreme poverty at 88,011,759.
According to the World Poverty Clock, “the outlook for poverty alleviation in Nigeria is currently weak,” with nearly six people slipping into extreme poverty every minute.
Continentour.com.ng gathers that the World Bank, IMF, United Nations, forecast that Nigeria will not hit the 2030 target for ending global poverty.
Further study also indicates that Nigeria’s poverty level is more concentrated in some states in the country than the other.
Below is a list of the states with the high poverty rate in Nigeria:
1. Zamfara state – 92%
2. Jigawa state – 88%
3. Bauchi state – 87%
4. Kebbi state – 86%
5. Katsina state – 82.2%
6. Taraba state – 78%
7. Gombe state – 77% 8. Ebonyi state – 56%
9. Plateau state – 51.6%
Meanwhile, wife of President Muhammadu Buhari, Aisha, has reassured Nigerians that the president will use his second term to alleviate poverty by closing the gap between the rich and the poor.
Aisha said this on Saturday, March 2, during a dinner organised by her at the State House Conference Center in Abuja, to celebrate the president’s victory.
Similarly, Continentour.com.ng earlier reported that Prophet Emmanuel Omale who predicted the victory of President Buhari in the 2019 election again predicted that the second coming of the president will benefit the poor.
In an interview with Nigerian Tribune, the Founder of Divine Hand of God International Ministries said it is his duty to tell people what he heard from God.
