Nigeria’s security chiefs are said to be in a meeting in Abuja, the federal capital, over the oncoming 2019 general elections slated to begin on Saturday, February 23 with the presidential and national assembly polls.
Daily Sun reports that the meeting was called by the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Gabriel Olonisakin and it is holding inside his office at the Defense Headquarters.
According to the report, those present in the meeting include the acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Adamu Mohammed, Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant-General Tukur Buratai, Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Admiral Ibok-Ette Ibas and the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshall Sadiq Abubakar.
Also in the meeting are Director-General, Department of State Security (DSS), Yusuf Magaji Bichi; Director-General, National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ahmed Abubakar and the Chief of Defence Intelligence (CDI), Air Vice Marshall Ahmed Usman.
Chiefs of training and operations of the Nigerian Armed Forces and those of the police, DSS, DIA and the NIA are also attending the meeting.
The meeting, which reportedly started at sometime past midday on Saturday, February 23, is said to be holding to review the security arrangements put in place for the 2019 general elections.
It is said that the meeting is also concentrating on possibility of outbreak of electoral violence.
Meanwhile, Continentour.com.ng reports that the meeting comes just days after President Muhammadu Buhari met with some security chiefs.
Continentour.com.ng had reported that on Tuesday, February 19, the president convened a crucial security meeting with service chiefs, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mohammed Adamu and some northern governors most of which are from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The meeting, which was held in the president’s office at Aso Rock, Abuja, had in attendance state governors like Jibrilla Bindow of Adamawa, Kashim Shettima of Borno and Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna.
