The United States embassy on Thursday, February 21, denied a tweet credited to its secretary of state, Michael Pompeo, making a negative comment about Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The US embassy made the denial on one of its social media handles. According to the country, the comment that earlier trended on social media should be disregarded because it is fake. The embassy said such comment was never made by Pompeo.
“FakeNews Alert! If you have seen such manufactured content on @facebook, or received it via @WhatsApp. Please communicate that it’s fake news,” the embassy stated.
The earlier trending comment which was described as fake quoted Pompeo as saying: “I personally refused to meet him or have anything to do with him (Atiku).
“I am really surprised that an individual indicted by the United States of America of huge corruption is being considered for Nigerian president…US Secretary of State, Michael R. Pompeo”.
Continentour.com.ng earlier reported how a fake news about the resignation of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo was described by a group, Initiative to Save Democracy (ISD), as the desperation of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to stir unnecessary controversy in the southwest.
The president of the group, Sunday James Akinloye, called on Nigerians to ignore the news, adding that PDP would stop at nothing to lay its hands on Nigeria’s treasury.
Akinloye said: “This is completely laughable. How can some people concoct a story that is entirely false, sending thousands of Nigerians into frenzy over nothing?
“This shows that the PDP is desperate and they will stop at nothing to lay their hands on Nigeria’s treasury but their plans will not work, in fact, it is dead on arrival.
“They claimed in 2015 that President Muhammadu Buhari was going to Islamize Nigeria once he is voted in but we found that it is a lie.”
