Nigerian Army has condemned a statement attributed to the presidential candidate of Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, asking the soldiers to disregard President Buhari’s directive in the forthcoming elections.
The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General, Tukur Buratai, who said Atiku’s statement was most unfortunate stated that he was in the highest level of government in the country before.
Buratai said the military in general is meant to obey the orders of the Commander-In-Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces to the latter.
He, however, asked the former vice president not only to withdraw the statement but to also apologise for attempting to invite the Army against what he termed as “constituted authority” it was meant to fully obey.
Buratai warned politicians and their supporters against testing the will of the army, insisting that those found to have violated the law, will be treated in line with President Buhari’s directive.
He also cautioned the officers against playing partisan roles, saying those with such feelings has up to Friday, February 22 to resign.
Meanwhile, Continentour.com.ng had reported that the presidential candidate of the PDP, Atiku Abubakar, accused the APC of planning to use the military to intimidate voters in order to pave the way for rigging during the general elections.
Atiku made the allegation when he accused President Buhari of showing complete disregard to the laws of this country following the president’s statement that ballot box snatchers would be doing so at their own risk.
Atiku in a statement on Monday, February 18, through his special assistant on public communication, Phrank Shaibu, described Buhari’s statement as inciting violence ahead of the general elections.
