Ahead of 2019 presidential election, gunmen wearing military uniform on Thursday, February 14, reportedly attacked a vehicle belonging to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Benue state.

The vehicle was reported to be conveying non-sensitive election materials to one of the LGAs in the state. This was disclosed by the state INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) Dr. Nentawe Yilwatda, Vanguard reports.

According to him, at the time of the attack, the vehicle was carrying non-sensitive materials to Logo area of the state.

This is true. Recently, our vehicle which was conveying non sensitive materials was attacked along Logo area by people in military uniform,” he said.

Meanwhile, INEC has said it will not postpone the general elections which will begin on February 16, despite the recent fire incidents in three of its offices.

Continentour.com.ng reported that the commission chairman, Mahmoud Yakubu, said although the fire incidents have constituted a set-back in INEC’s preparation for a smooth election, the commission will still go on to conduct the election.

Yakubu made the statement through one of his national commissioners, Festus Okoye, during the unveiling of a central election monitoring hub for Civil Society Organisations (CSOs).

Recall that there have been three different fire incidents at INEC offices in three different states over the past two weeks.

First, it was reported that hoodlums set ablaze INEC’s office at Isiala Ngwa South local government area of Abia state. Next, INEC’s office at Qua’an Pan LGA of Plateau also went up in flames.

Less than a week after, a fire broke out at INEC’s office near Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka.
