Pep Guardiola failed to beat Jose Mourinho in the race for who has the best Premier League record after 100 matches in the English topflight.
According to a UK Sun report, Guardiola missed the opportunity of emerging EPL’s most successful manager after 100 games as Manchester City suffered a surprise defeat to Newcastle on Tuesday, January 29.
The pair of Salomon Rondon and Matt Ritchie scored for the home-side to see off City despite Sergio Aguero’s opener.
The performance meant Guardiola claimed 73 wins in his first 100-game in the Premier League.
On the other hand, Portuguese tactician Mourinho remains the only manager in the EPL that has garnered more points than the Spaniard, also with 73 points from his first 100 games – he has three more draws.
A further breakdown of the statistics revealed that Mourinho recorded 237 points from 73 wins, 18 draws and nine defeats during his spell at Chelsea in 2004.
Guardiola picked up 73 wins, 15 draws and 12 defeats for a total of 234 points. Manuel Pellegrini claimed the third spot with 212 points after winning 65 games.
Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson could not make it to the podium after 62 wins to end with 211 points.
Guardiola’s Man City claimed the Premier League silverware last campaign with over 100 points from 38 matches.
Mourinho was axed by the Red Devils in December after seeing the Old Trafford dwellers in their worst start to the season in 28 years.
Guardiola’s City are five points adrift of leaders Liverpool at the top of the Premier League log after 24 matches.
But will be looking forward to return to winning ways against Arsenal this weekend.
Earlier, Continentour.com.ng reported that Newcastle United defeated Manchester City 2-1 on Tuesday, January 29, at St James Park.
Sergio Aguero scored the opener in less than 30 seconds as City were on course for their ninth straight win across all competitions, but Salomon Rondon equalized in the second stanza before Matt Ritchie netted the winner from the spot in the 80th minute.
