NIGERIA RANKED AS 19th MOST CORRUPT COUNTRY IN AFRICA – TRANSPARENCY INTERNATIONAL

Transparency International (TI) in its 2018 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) has rated Nigeria as 19th most corrupt country in Africa, 18th most corrupt country in Sub-Saharan Africa, and 33rd most corrupt country in the world.

The 2018 CPI report which was released on Tuesday, January 28, shows that Nigeria ranked 144 out of 180 countries in the year under review as against the 148 out of 180 countries in the 2017 CPI.

The report also indicates that Denmark and New Zealand came first and second respectively while Finland, Singapore, Sweden, Switzerland came third.

Norway and Netherlands came seventh and eighth as Canada and Luxembourg came ninth, according to the report.

A statement released by the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC), the Nigerian chapter of the Transparency International, said the country scored 27 out of 100 points in the 2018 CPI, maintaining the same score as in the 2017 CPI.

In 2016, Nigeria reportedly scored 27/100 and was ranked 136th but dropped to 148/180 in 2017 despite a higher score of 28/100.

According to TI: “The index, which ranks 180 countries and territories by their perceived levels of public sector corruption according to experts and businesspeople, uses a scale of 0 to 100, where 0 is highly corrupt and 100 is very clean.

More than two-thirds of countries score below 50 on this year’s CPI, with an average score of just 43.

“It reveals that the continued failure of most countries to significantly control corruption is contributing to a crisis in democracy around the world.

While there are exceptions, the data shows that despite some progress, most countries are failing to make serious inroads against corruption.”

The 2018 TI report came amidst allegations by the opposition parties and some Nigerians that the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration’s anti-corruption fight is one sided.

Continentour.com.ng had recently reported that the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the forthcoming 2019 general elections, Atiku Abubakar, accused President Buhari of fighting opposition instead of fighting corruption.

The former vice president made the allegation in a statement by his media aide, Paul Ibe, on Thursday, January 17.

Atiku expressed displeasure that President Buhari has not condemned the action of the Kano state governor, Umar Ganduje, for allegedly taking a bribe from a contractor.
