ONNOGHEN SUSPENSION: SENATE APPROACHES SUPREME COURT

The Nigerian Senate has approached the Supreme Court for an interpretation of the powers of the president in the appointment and removal of the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), with respect to the roles of the upper chamber of the National Assembly and the National Judicial Council (NJC) in the entire process.

This Day reports that confused by President Muhammadu Buhari’s suspension of Chief Justice Walter Onnoghen, over alleged false declaration of assets and the subsequent appointment of Tanko Mohammed in acting capacity, the Senate, which held the view that it had been undermined in the entire process by ‘criminally usurping’ its powers, therefore, approached the Supreme Court for a timely interpretation.

Continentour.com.ng gathered that the Senate which is scheduled to consider a special session on the matter on Tuesday, January 29, envisages a rancorous sitting especially from supporters of the government and the ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC), noting that the only way out of the current constitutional quagmire is by approaching the Supreme Court.

The newspaper said that the suit was being filed on the evening of Monday, January 28, at the Supreme Court, Abuja.

Meanwhile, Continentour.com.ng had previously reported that the federal government gave more reasons the immediate past chief justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, was suspended.

The government said the decision to suspend Onnoghen was due to the ex-CJN’s abuse of judicial processes. The government’s position was made known in Abuja by the minister of information and national orientation, Alhaji Lai Mohammed on Monday, January 28.

Alhaji Mohammed had said: ”This whole issue is about the country’s highest judicial officer, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, being accused of a breach of the Code of Conduct for Public Officers, and the legal and moral conundrum surrounding that.”
