I HAVE NOT RESIGNED – TROUBLED ONNOGHEN SPEAKS AFTER 3 DAYS

The embattled Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen, has spoken three days after his suspension by President Muhammadu Buhari saying he had not resigned his position as speculated on Monday, January 28.

In a statement from him signed by his media aide, Awassam Bassey, the chief justice said the speculation that he had resigned was fake news.

“Mischief makers are still circulating this fake news. Once again, no truth in it whatsoever.

The Hon CJN, Hon Justice Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen, GCON, has not resigned,” Bassey said.

The Punch reports that the rumour of Onnoghen’s resignation came less than 24 hours to the emergency meeting summoned by the National Judicial Council (NJC) to deliberate on the action of the president against him.

Continentour.com.ng earlier reported that the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), on Monday, January 28, ordered all lawyers in Nigeria boycott the courts across the nation for two days between Tuesday, January 29, and Wednesday, January 30, to protest the crisis in the judiciary.

The action, according to the NBA, is protest what it called the alleged constitutional infractions in the suspension of Walter Onnoghen as Chief Justice of Nigeria.

The umbrella body of the Nigerian lawyers made the decision at an emergency meeting of its National Executive Committee (NEC) held at the NBA House, Plot 1101 Muhamadu Buhari Way, Cadastral Zone A00 Central Area, Abuja.

The report said only the statutory NEC members attended the meeting and these are the national officers, past presidents, past general secretaries, branch chairmen, branch secretaries, branch NEC representatives and chairmen and secretaries of sections.

It also reported a massive protest held in Lagos, the country’s commercial capital, as participants carried placards to drive their message in support of the suspension of Onnoghen by the president.

It stated that Comrade Festus Akintola, who spoke on behalf of the protesters, declared that the law must be allowed to take its full course as this would serve as a deterrent to others.

“We have all gathered here to express our disgust with the actions of some segments of the country that have viewed the action of the president in placing the Chief Justice of Nigeria on suspension for false declaration of assets in contravention of the Code of Conduct Bureau Act for public office holders in the country,” Akintola said.
