National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) has made fresh declaration on the presence of the deadly Ebola disease, which was responsible for the untimely death of many in the West Africa country and Nigeria.
The Institute said scientists found the traces of the deadly virus’s presence in a series of laboratory experiments carried out on bats, The Herald reports.
Continentour.com.ng gathers that after sampling hundreds of bats over the past two years, the scientists detected the Zaire Ebola virus in one bat.
Addressing journalists in Monrovia, the country’s capital, NPHIL director general, Tolbert Nyenswah, said the finding was nonetheless significant, as researchers believe bats may be a natural host of the disease.
Nyenswah said: “To date, all other bats have tested negative. Ongoing studies will examine whether more … bats are infected, how bats spread the virus.”
It would be recalled that the last major Ebola outbreak was in 2014. Since then, about 11,000 people died as the virus spread across the major West African countries of Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Nigeria.
Meanwhile, Continentour.com.ng previously reported that Ebola deadly virus, that raged in some West African countries several years ago, had staged a return in northwest part of Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), killing 17 people.
Congo’s health ministry on Tuesday, May 8, described the fresh outbreak as a “public health emergency with international impact”.
