The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Uche Secondus has condemned the call for resignation of the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen, by the federal government.
Secondus said the alleged false declaration of asset charges levelled against Onnoghen shows that the federal government under the watch of President Muhamamdu Buhari is orchestrating the destruction of democracy in Nigeria.
The PDP chairman alleged that the agenda of the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led administration is to rig Nigeria’s forthcoming 2019 presidential election.
A statement signed by the Ike Abonyi, a special assistant on media and publicity to the PDP national chairman said, “the president and his team are arm twisting the code of conduct tribunal to force out the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Walter Onnoghen.”
According to Abonyi, the APC led by President Buhari believe that an independent Judiciary will obstruct their alleged rigging plan in the 2019 presidential election.
Abonyi said: “Prince Secondus said that the President and his team are arm twisting the code of conduct tribunal to force out the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Walter Onnoghen because they believe that an independent Judiciary will obstruct their rigging plan.”
The statement also alleged plans to blackmail, frame up and add up fictitious figures in the CJN’s bank accounts by the government and their agents.
Secondus said the the plot is aimed at destroying the envious career of a man because of desperation for power.
“What they are trying to do is not only illegal but a recipe for anarchy and breakdown of rule of law and must be vehemently resisted.
“President Buhari’s inclination to non-democratic behaviour is now apparent as he moves to muscle all other arms of government as well as ingredients of democracy,” Secondus said.
Accusing the present administration of planning to truncate democracy in Nigeria, Secondus also called on all lovers of democracy and rule of law in Nigeria to stand up to counter the alleged plan.
He also advised the embattled CJN to disregard the directive from the executive over his resignation, stating that his trial at the CCT failed to follow the provision of the law.
“The agenda is not hidden, which is to truncate democracy rather than face the Nigerian electorate.
“Because of what they have in stock, their nefarious plans to thwart the will of the people in the forthcoming general election, they want to raise the level of the intimidation of all critical organs of democracy, the legislature, the Judiciary including but not limited to the fourth estate of the realm, the press.
“What other evidence do we need to show that threat to democracy is real and evident with President Buhari abhorring all known ingredients of democracy including rule of law,” he added.
Meanwhile, Continentour.com.ng previously reported that on the resumption of his trial on Tuesday, January 22, Justice Onnoghen, represented by a senior advocate of Nigeria, Wole Olanipekun, was absent at the Court.
The Code of Conduct Bureau had filed a six-count charge of false assets declaration against Onnoghen, on January 14.
Also during the resumed hearing, protesters stormed the CCT in Abuja on Tuesday, January 22, calling for an end to the trial of Justice Onnoghen by the CCT.
The protesters in their scores held miniature Nigerian flags and banners with various inscriptions as they called for an end to the trial.
