The senator representing Kaduna central at the Senate, Shehu Sani, has reacted to the approval of 27,000 national minimum wage for workers in Nigeria by the National Council of State (NCS) on Tuesday, January 22.
The NCS was presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari and attended by Nigerian leaders including Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan.
The federal government, with the approval by the NCS, would reportedly send a minimum wage bill to the National Assembly on Wednesday, January 23.
However, Senator Sani who had once joined Nigerian workers in a protest against the government over the agitation for the N30,000 minimum wage, condemned the council of states’ move.
Shehu Sani has never hidden his support for the national minimum wage increment.
In a tweet posted on his official Twitter handle, @ShehuSani, Sani asked rhetorically:
“National Council of State, what will you gain by ‘cutting 3k from 30k’, in a nation where even government agencies are declaring ‘record breaking’ billions and trillions in revenues; and also states, making claims of higher IGR?”
Similarly, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has rejected the N27,000 new national minimum wage adopted by the National Council of States.
Dr Peter Ozo-Eson, the NLC general secretary, made this known to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja. According to him, the council has no jurisdiction determining another amount after a Tripartite Committee has submitted its report.
“It is abysmal of government to be delaying the submission of an Executive Bill to the National Assembly and by wrongfully adopting N27,000 through the council of states,” he said.
Ozo-Eson, however, said the NLC has called an emergency National Executive Council meeting for Friday, January 25, to weigh on the deadline given to government within which to submit an executive bill to the National Assembly.
